passage master. I think that the passage where Tengo is trying to get Frikkie to understand what the whites are doing to the blacks but he never can understand. I think that this represents the feelings with a lot of the whites and blacks and how they think that this is just the way it is supposed to be. This passage is on pg. 193 paragraph 2

Discussion Director- The things that went well in our conversation were the questions. We spent a lot of time talking about what will happen when Frikkie meets up with Tengo. Most of our group thought they would have to fight each other. We had a little listening problem today near the end of the discussion but we got through it very nicely.

My passages basically covered the fact that apartheid has come back into the lives of these two boys after many years of not seeing each other and how they don’t trust each other anymore. My most important passage was “Tengo and I are here now. He can shoot me if he wants to. He has the gun.” The conversation this brought up is how Frikkie finally realizes Tengo and himself were no longer friends.

Passage Master – I think the passage on page 146 paragraph 3 was the most important because it was well-written and it may have a foreshadow of what will happen in the end of the book. One of the books that the minister gives Tengo is called the Stranger, this may indicate that Tengo is going to be meet someone that is now a stranger to him (Frikkie).

I believe that the words that I found in the book made our discussion more interesting. I had my words in front of me and I asked all my partners what they thought the words meant. After they gave me their idea of the words I said the meaning and we discussed the words. All in all, I say that my words were quite interesting and gave everyone some new vocabulary to deal with.

Most of the passages I shared during the Discussion was relating to Tengo because on all the chapters we were assigned to read, there were almost none to read about Frikkie because everything was on Tengo. I think the most interesting one and the one that brought everyone to get deep into discussion was with the paragraph about Tengo being forced to do things and think things that he might not want to. The key word in this is ‘peer pressure’.
The paragraph;
“I have to think,” Tengo answered.
“I hear from the others that no one sees you. You never go out. I know you want to study--- it’s a hard deal for you. But these are exciting times, man. We can make things change. So since the boycott has prevented you from staying committed to you studies., better commit yourself to our cause, my friend. You look terrible, man. Come out, and I’ll buy you a beer and we can talk.”

Illustrator- My picture is about the school when there are kids boycotting the school. I drew a lot of people protesting the school and Tengo looking confused about what to do. It shows how confused Tengo is about life.

I think I’m going to try and make better questions and extend them in order to make the discussion longer and allow the others in my group to think more about the book and what happened. I think we could have gone over the questions more and discuss the summery because we didn’t and that could have given everyone in the group a better understanding.

Summarizer
Tengo can’t go to school because of the boycott and starts giving up on school on studying when Joseph comes back and tells him that he can get an education overseas like he has always wanted. At first he is happy until he realizes that he couldn’t stand to live overseas. He decides to go and become a freedom fighter and gets ready to leave with Joseph but he runs into trouble while returning the reverends books. There is a fight that breaks out at the church because of some people that were killed by the whites and Tengo starts helping people throw rocks when one of the soldiers gets shot. Then Tengo gets scared and runs away.

Discussion Director – Well our conversation focused mainly aboout aparthied and how is started to really affect Tengo in his social life as well academic. Such as not being able to take the matric and being under peer-preasure for joining the strugle. One thing that our group did well was staying on topic. One thing that we can do better for next time is to think about how aparthied will affect Tengo in the future aswell. Also we need to add more detail to our conversations and discus more of our thoughts to eachother.

In today’s reading, it started of from Tengo realizing the lack of privacy in Johannesburg and thinking what the Ooubas said was correct about studying there. He was really smart in school and got moved to a class with kids his age and had a chance of getting a scholar. Tengo and Joseph had talks about why Joseph had gotten out of school because of the fight with students and the police. Frikkie goes to the army and comes to visit the farm, trained. Tengo even might go to the United States and writes letters to his parents back at the Kraal.

My passages were connecting to our discussion very well. Since I had many passages that were connecting to our thoughts, I found that I had chosen parts of the book that should have been there. My favorite part was on page 121 where the title actually comes into place. They talk about the rain and how there is none, so all the crops would go out.
Overall I say that most of my passages made the discussion better.

Vocabulary Enricher – One of the main words that were important was seldom because it is the way the blacks were treated. The way they seldom got any food or how they were seldom treated well. Another one was kaffir. It is an important word because it is sort of offensive to the blacks but the whites don’t care and it just shows how they thought of the blacks. Another word is kaffir boeti which means friendly to blacks. In the book it was used as something insulting and that is why I put that in.

Sabei;
I think that the discussion generally went really well because everyone participated equally. Everyone was USUALLY on task adding on to a topic and went really deep into the topics by adding on to it and adding new ideas which branched out from the same topic. We also related to self and world and everyone participated by stating their opinion and everyone was comfortable to challenge each others ideas. I think the discussion would’ve worked better if people stuck to the conversation without drifting off to some other topics and if we all listened to the people we SHOULD be listening to.

Today, we made loads of text to self connections. All of us shared how racism affects us even today. Others gave examples from the book about racism and how it affects Frikkie and Tengo. We talked a little bit about the apartheid in the beginning of our conversation.
Our discussion was enriched when we started to talk about how Tengo leaves for Johannesburg and about how he lives there and in what conditions. We had excellent words that were presented. The phrases were neatly woven into the conversation. Overall our discussion was indeed better than the last conversation we had.

Vocabulary Enricher
Vocab- The words I chose were: Stoep, Slatted, Perplexing, Linoleum, Stunted, Township. The meanings of these words are, a porch, stacking things, confusing, washable tiles, stopped, and a community. These words helped our group understand some of the passages that were brought up and gave more reasons and examples for asking questions.

Passage Master – An important quote today was on page 57 when Sissie says to Tengo that he should call Frikkie, Master Frikkie. After that, Sissie’s mom came in the room and shooed away Tengo, telling him that it’s not good to have that kind of person in your room. I think this is the start of the apartheid for Frikkie because he knows that the white people are being really mean to the blacks. It’s an important quote because when he gives the pen knife back to Frikkie he says “get it yourself next time.” I think that it is the start of the apartheid.
Illustrator- The picture i drew represented when tengo first realized that aparthied was realy around him and that it was a bad thing. The reason i chose this theme for my picture is because it realy shows what Tengo starts to realize through-out the entire book.

Discussion Director – Today went well for the first day of the lit circles. We had a lot to say and waited for each other to finish talking and we also went deeply into what is happening in the book.

Summarizer – The book starts with two children, one (Frikkie) that wants not to have to go to school and wants to work on his uncles farm. The other (tengo) wants to go to school and not have to do boring farm work. Tengo it less wealthy than Frikkie and can't afford much. Tengo's aunt's Madam sent books to Tengo so that he can read. Frikkie talks about how he is going to take over the farm when his uncle dies. Then they talk about race and where they came from. The discussion went well while talking about this.

Vocabulary Enricher

Passage Master
The most important passage is on pg. 24 and 25. Where Tengo and his cousin Joseph talk about the conditions of being black and how bad it is in Johannesburg. And how they have to have passes to be able to live there. I think that this passage helps Tengo understand that he is getting mistreated on the farm as well and so he wants to leave.

Shuk:
Our discussion yesterday started off with Frikkie and Tengo’s friendship. We talked about how the apartheid may have them both drift apart from each other. Another one of my questions was how do you think Frikkie’s parents feel about their son hanging around with one of the other race? Our discussion was later enriched by talking about all the different characters in the book. Our discussion had many ideas given and that made our discussion more interesting.
Summarizer
In this part of the reading, Frikkie visited his old friend, Tengo, at his uncle’s farm. He helps around with the chores and plays games with Tengo. Frikkie hates school and loves being on the farm, but on the other hand Tengo would rather go to school in the city than be stuck on the farm. Frikkie comes and goes, and once Tengo’s cousin, Joseph, tells Tengo about the city life and about pass cards. Yearning to learn he gets sent a box of books. In our group we touched base on the difference of the two characters. We also talked about if the apartheid had started yet.

Vocabulary Enricher
Some of the words that I chose were important and unimportant. Some of the important words were like apartheid. That means the division between black and white people. The other words I chose were; bales, which means a large package of raw or used material, tightly rapped, yielded, which means to put forth by natural process by cultivation, veld, which means open country bearing grass, bushes, or shrubs, cultivated, which means to prepare and work on (land) in order to raise crops, biltong, which means strips of lean meat dried in open air. And lastly my most important word is apartheid, which is the division between black and white people. Bye.

Illustrator -
My illustration is of Frikkie asking Tengo for the cow and Tengo hesitant to give it to Frikkie. Until Frikkie said 'please', Tengo did not find it in him to want to give it to Frikkie. In our lit circles we discussed about an apartheid which is a legal discrimination of the blacks and whites. We also predicted that further in the book, the apartheid will probably separate the friendship of Tengo and Frikkie. Tengo is bailing out more than Frikkie because he doesn't really like the fact that Frikkie is educated and he isn't. He didn't really want to give the clay cow to Frikkie at first but he didn't want to seem rude so he ended up giving it to him. Also, Frikkie had said 'please' and made it harder for Tengo to say no.
